MOOC

Delving into the MOOC, I came across many thought provoking subjects... how digital disruption is changing the nature of work across industries the world over, the associated risks and opportunities, the transformative powers of AI and 3D technology in sectors as varied as retail and medicine, aspects related to adoption of technology in terms of age and an ageing workforce, and the rise of the gig economy.

Engagement With Peers

I enjoyed reading many well designed and insightful blogs designed by my peers. Will Norrell's post offered an in-depth view of how blockchain and the cloud are transforming the auditing profession at a fundamental level. Steven's take on digitization in the health sector made some very important points. Nowadays hospitals and doctors the world over are stretched beyond capacity because of the Covid 19 crisis. Surely in the future, initiatives like the one undertaken by IBM will make it easier and faster for symptomatic patients to seek treatment. Selina's wonderful post about the German company Mr Spex, that is disrupting the eyewear market through a unique amalgamation of an online presence, physical stores and Virtual Reality, was especially fascinating. Masato made some very interesting points about how the Japanese consumer goods company Muji was leveraging customer data to create a bespoke product offering.

Hope for the Future

As I come to the end of the Module I have learned about subjects as diverse as economics, deep learning, business strategy, entrepreneurship and fake news in the context of digitization. It seems like only yesterday I had my first BEMM129 class! Understanding the role that digital disruptors play in the circular economy and the importance of SMAC will enable me to be a more intuitive leader in the future and apply out of the box and technologically oriented solutions to challenging problems and processes. If I launch my own startup, or work for one, I know how to customize a product offering to be a disruptive market player and consolidate my competitive position.

A critical evaluation of the legal and ethical facets of the digital world and filter bubbles has changed the way I view information online. I find myself questioning information/ credibility of sources I encounter a lot more than I did before and being more cognizant of the manipulative aspects of algorithmic bias. The best value addition of Digital Business Models is that it has made me hopeful and excited for the future, rather than fearful and uncertain about what changes this technological renaissance will bring about, in our societies, environment and the world at large.
